1. Hispanic Heritage History Bee Contest at NABE conference Feb. 7-9, 2013 Orlando, Florida
The National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) and the Spain-Florida Foundation 500 Years will host the Nationwide English version of the Hispanic Heritage History Bee Contest in Orlando, Florida at the NABE Conference on February 7th, 2013.
In addition to the History Bee, and on behalf of the Foundation, Dr. Laura Alonso-Gallo, Professor and Chair of the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Barry University, will give a presentation titled “In search of our Spanish Roots: integrating the Hispanic Cultural Legacy in the Curriculum”.
2. Hispanic Heritage History Bee Contest in Spanish. March 9th, 2013 Miami, Florida|
The “Hispanic Heritage History Bee” created by the Education Office of the General Consulate of Spain and the Spain-Florida Foundation 500 years produced a contest to promote the history of Hispanic colonial Florida.
The “Hispanic Heritage History Bee,” inspired by the famous “spelling bee” model, will award students that can best demonstrate their understanding of Spain’s long influence in Florida’s colonial past.
The contest is only one of the many activities planned by the Spain-Florida Foundation 500 years to commemorate the 500th anniversary on 2013 of the arrival of the Spaniards to Florida.
The contest will consist of two phases and the participating students will be divided among: 4th and 5th grade, Middle School, and High School.
The first edition of the contest in 2010, boasted of 30 participating schools from Miami-Dade County and more than 1,600 participating students. The winner of the High School level was granted a trip to Spain.
In the second edition of the contest in 2012 more than 40 schools from Miami, Broward and West Palm Beach, and more than 2,000 students will participate in the contest. The High School level winner will again be granted a trip to Spain.
The Spain-Florida Foundation plans to continue administering future editions of the contest and also provide an English version of it. This will allow more students to participate in the contest.
In 2013 the Foundation plans to expand the contest to additional scholls in Florida, as well as administer the written portion of the exam via interenet in an E-learning Space.
3. Hispanic Heritage in Florida: Essay and Art Contest. December 2013
Under the name "XVI Century: The arrival of the Spanish to Florida” the competition has provided Miami-Dade students the opportunity to express their imagination through art and writing.
In the second edition of the contest in 2010, students from eight school in Miami-Dade County and more than 1.200 students participated by either drawing or writing about the history of Florida.
In the third edition of the contest in 2011 more than 1,500 students from Miami-Dade, Broward and West Palm Beach will participate in the contest.
4. Hispanic Legacy in Florida: E-Learning Space
The goal is to create a communication channel with students of different levels that feel welcome to read and research about their Hispanic roots.
Every child will have a fair opportunity to access to its Hispanic legacy through an interactive child oriented history game, increasing the level of conciseness regarding to Hispanic legacy in Florida.
Our active Educational Agenda will provide yet again, a wonderful opportunity for grade school students to learn about the history of Florida. An interactive Game called “Juan Ponce de Leon” can now be found in the E-Learning Space of our website.
The Juan Ponce de Leon Game Section of the E-Learning Space will provide a fun and interactive way for 21st century students to learn the history of 17th and 18th century Florida.
Using tools and study resources found on our website, students will research and explore the history of Florida and compare it to modern society.
The Juan Ponce de Leon game questions were designed for TWO purposes:
The first is to provide students with interesting information about Colonial Florida, and the second purpose is to ask students to compare and contrast Colonial Florida to modern Florida. With this in mind students will explore the changes that the state and society has undergone in the past 500 years.
Every two weeks a different thought provoking question will be posted on our “Juan Ponce de Leon Game” tab of the E-Learning Space.
Students will then visit our site, look up that week’s question and send their responses to the Foundation. The first correct answer received will be mentioned on our website and the winning student will also win wonderful prizes!
The questions posted in the Juan Ponce de Leon game section will be part of the Hispanic Heritage History Bee contest.
